The Relay also features a luminary ceremony, held after dark to honor survivors and to remember those who died because of cancer. The luminaries line the track and are a vivid reminder of cancer’s toll.
Luminaries cost $5 each and purchase forms are available at the Rappahannock Library and the Commissioner of Revenue’s office as well as many of the county’s country stores and gas stations. Interested persons may also contact Ms Jennifer Manly at 635- 2016.
Rappahannock County’s Relay last year won first place honors in the Mid-Atlantic region and seventh place honors in the entire country for most money raised on a per capita basis. Organizers believe that this year’s undertaking will be even better than last year’s, not only with respect to funds raised but also with respect to the enjoyment of participants.
Mr. Ben Atkins, who is co- chairing the Relay this year with Ms Ester Settle, promises more music, more entertainment, warm pizzas, and earlier closing ceremonies.
The Relay for Life is truly a community wide occasion and community help is needed to set up, conduct, and clean up after the event.
