As I grew up, I took for granted various customs and quirks of Rappahannock society that other parts of the world would probably find odd or quaint. For instance, the famous Rappahannock Wave: the habit of giving a wave and a smile to fellow citizens as you pass them on the road, even if you don’t know them. This act demonstrates the friendly atmosphere of Rappahannock, which is so sadly lacking in other regions. Occasionally, our visiting relatives have remarked with puzzled expressions, “Some man that I don’t even know just waved to me on the road.”
It was only later, after I started going to school in Charlottesville, that I realized just how remarkable Rappahannock is in so many ways. When I told my Korean roommate, who is from the
