Church services
Currently dependent upon a circuit preacher, worship services at the Thornton Gap Primitive Baptist Church were conducted only on the third Sunday of each month. The next day was that Sunday' and we were invited to attend: When we arrived at 10:30 thp following morning, we found we were 40% of a congregation of 5. Wayne, it seems, waS one of the three remaining members of this church - he in his 40s, the other two were over 90 and over 100.
The six of us (including the minister), sang old mountain hymns (all new to us), for the first half hour, had a prayer, and listened to a one hour sermon. Then the collection plat£ was passed and we closed with another hymn and prayer. We were prepared for a hellfirfi and brimstone sermon, biit without notes, Rev. J. Toliver Utz delivered an affirming, upbeat, from-the-heart message of simple faith.
With no organ, six voices sang a cappella and seemed to fill the sanctuary with music. The words and the music had a folksy quality that was beautiful. If they weren’t written for the area, they certainly captured the flavor of the area.
