Rappahannock County, what a blessing to have been born here, to have lived one’s life here, or to have lived part of one’s life here. It is a blessing to live among mountains and farmland, wild and domestic animals, acres of woodland, rivers and streams. It is a blessing to live in a community, to even know and feel community in the 21st century.

My husband and I moved to Rappahannock in 1987 with our two year old son, Arlen, from the close quarters of a beach community in Southern California. We wanted space more than anything, and privacy. Finding our home close to the end of Smedley Hollow was a memorable day.

My vision was clear: I was looking for a simple farmhouse with a view. When we heard there was a house that had just “gone on the market” on five acres with a spring, my heart knew this was the place. As we drove down five miles of hollow roads, the further we got from the two lane highway, the stronger grew our feeling of certainty.
