Recently there was an article on the front page of the country
section of the paper describing the fanfare of the 4-H Talent Show. The children performed with precision of instruments, sang with elegance and dramatic and styles, danced energetically, displayed creativity and just had an all around grand time showing off their special talents and encouraging one another with loud cheers and whistles. They worked very hard toward that one four minute performance to win a blue ribbon.
But during all the noise and shuffle there was one person who kept the ball rolling. She is the one who encouraged the Drama Club to get the word out to be involved in the talent show. She helped with setting the standard for the show’s acts to make sure they were 4-H appropriate and then produced the brochure.
She provided materials for the Drama Club to make colorful posters and gave the children the opportunity to be as creative as they wanted to be with their artwork. She had the children design the covers for the Talent Show and the Drama Club play programs and then made sure they were run off correctly the day before the event.
She arranged for the judges to be there and worked with them to make sure they were comfortable, could hear all the music and could see a complete performance. Then she sat in the front row and took pictures of all the acts, all the while making sure they all got to the stage in an orderly fashion.
She has taught us all how to allow children to be children, giving them projects and opportunities. She is not afraid to hand a kid a video camera and tell them to go shoot something worthwhile and then steps back to allow them to create.
She keeps them focused on learning to be constructive while they are all having a blast. She gives up a weekend with her family to take teenagers off to some crazy place to ride inner tubes down a hill in the snow so that their club can have a special time together.
This person is always looking ahead searching for new ideas and better ways to do things. She is much of the reason all of our children go to a great 4-H camp every summer and
