This is where two more of our sons, Devin and Keenan were bom. They know where they were born. These fields and woods are where they are climbing, running, planting seeds, building forts, and having a childhood and adolescence that is a treasure. They have also been able to learn of the wild: the snake, the bear, the deer, the fox, the falcon, the hawk, the owl...the list can surely go on, so plentiful is the wildlife that share our county.
Rappahannock has offered our family the quiet and privacy to live our lives and the community of friends and fellow “Rappahannockers” to share the joys and inevitable difficulties of life.
Rappahannock County supports a community of farmers, both traditional and organic, businesses, active local government, visual arts, music, and theatre, writers and healthy churches. And yet it is the farmers of Rappahannock’s past who we must acknowledge for the rural spaces that envelop us. Without the continuation of their livelihood, the land we weave in and out of in a day’s drive wouldn’t exist.
The county is graced by the quiet, aged mountains. These mountains are a presence wherever one finds oneself in the county. They hold an energy that is like a balm to our rapidly changing lives. Their broad, rolling majesty is almost unbroken visually, giving the illusion of a seamless embrace, as a friend who lays their arm over our shoulder.
Awareness of what makes Rappahannock the special place it is will preserve it. Our leaders must recognize the greed that is the root of developers’ intentions to sell Rappahannock as a product.
