When paying a bereavement call, the gift of food is sure to be taken as a thoughtful and helpful gesture. If the offer of help is made, make every effort to follow through on the promise in a quiet and convenient manner. By the same token, friends of the bereaved should make it known that they are available to talk or “just be there.” Most of us feel awkward when someone dies, but that doesn’t mean we want to be alone.
