monument to the Hump Airlift in China. This bilingual school is a tie between generations of U.S. and Chinese Humpsters. Descendants of U. S. Humpsters are invited to volunteer as English teachers and a few excellent students will go to the United States for further English education.
Following the memorial ceremony, reunion participants will have an opportunity to participate in a Nostalgic Hump flight that will carry them over the same terrain that they passed over some 50 years prior. The hair raising 500 mile airlift route from bases in Assam, India to Kunming, China passed over some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world including headhunter infested jungles and 470 snow covered mountain peaks in excess of 13,000 feet. The area, known as “The Hump”, ultimately claimed over 1,000 airplanes and 600 lives during the three year airlift operation.
