Volunteerism

The month of April is National

Volunteer Month and residents of the

county deserve special recognition.

In the editorial platform of the Rappahannock

News we use several bedrock issues to be of special

importance to the character and heritage of Rappahannock County and one of these statements read:

Volunteerism, a hallmark of those who live in this proud and independent community, will be supported and encouraged as a continuing reflection of the strong timber and fierce spirit of the Rappahannock heritage.

Rappahannock County is blessed with many volunteers serving in various capacities. Just this past Saturday, the Rappahannock Recreational Facilities Authority organized the 22nd annual Fodderstack classic race. This successful race was the combination of many efforts from county residents, but we extend special thanks to Jean Lillard for hours of dedication and work to this event. John McCarthy rounded the event out with an excellent, well organized awards ceremony. The sponsor of the race, The Inn is always gracious in going beyond the call of duty to sponsor events such as this one.

Later in the day, the annual Rappahannock Pageant was held at RCES, again the efforts of volunteers and the Sperryville Rescue Squad.

In between the threat of rains on Saturday, the Rappahannock Trash Free efforts were supervised by Buck Payne.

Volunteers from many organizations within Rappahannock work countless hours to encourage strong community efforts. School officials, churches, civic organizations, as well as the Retired Senior Citizen programs under the direction of Jeanne McNear all give countless hours.

We encourage you to thank a volunteer today, this week or this month for their efforts and most of all we applaud each of you for a job well done, even though many organizations and individuals were not named in this column. A special thanks to each and everyone!
