Gore won in Tennessee as a
representative and later senator by adopting anti-abortion and pro-gun positions, contrary to those taken by the senior Albert Gore who went down with all liberal guns firing. These positions would have been heavy baggage in any national campaign and A1 just quietly dropped them.
Losing Tennessee this time around would only have surprised some Democrat in a monastery. Nothing subtle about it at all; the Gore campaign had written off hopes of winning Tennessee from the get-go.
In fact it wasn’t until Gore’s message of saving social security and allowing medicare to fund drugs that he began to realize he had a fighting chance in Florida, where the governor, Bush’s •brother Jeb, was campaigning only lethargically for Dubya.
Florida was not originally •considered an easy win for Gore, but an uphill struggle.
