Want to have the best garden in town this year? Garden experts advise beginning by making sure garden soil is healthy.
“Establishing good soil is the single most important thing we can do for the plants we grow in our gardens,” said Bob Bell, president of Mantis, the Pennsylvaniabased maker of power gardening tools. “The key is knowing what soil consists of and learning how to make it better.”
In a handful of great soil, only about half of it is typically solid matter. The other half is air and water. The tiny air and water pockets found in healthy soil give plant roots the “breathing room” they need to take up nutrients. The little air and water pockets also enable living microorganisms to break down organic matter into forms usable by plants.
“When organic matter decays, it becomes a dark, sticky material called humus,” said Bell. “Humus is the glue that holds soil particles — the sand, clay and silt — together with just the right amount of spaces for air and water.”
