By splitting the ballot in two, a larger type face could be used. Instead, many screwed up totally.
With just a bit more money, this egregious problem could have been fixed with two or more balloting cards. In Montgomery county, Maryland, where I vote, we usually have two, sometimes three ballots and vote both sides with a foolproof little puncher that could drive a square hole through leather. I certainly wouldn’t argue that we have state of the art stuff here in the Old Line State but one word is not in our vocabulary— “chad”.
It cannot be that big an expense to fix at least the mechanical devices used to vote. A hand operated stylus (a convenience I suppose, for people without ball point pens along!) sounds like something from the “development challenged” world and not one of the oldest states of the Union!
