These humus particles also contribute to soil fertility. Adding humus to sandy soils makes the soil more fertile because it allows the soil to hold on to water and nutrients.
Adding humus to clay soils spreads out the clay particles (which tend to clump tightly together) so water and nutrients can more easily pass through.
