By Kaichen Earl McRae Times Community Newspapers Writer ^ The following interview was conducted with Chuck Hoysa, agricultural agent for the Virginia Cooperative Extension in Warrenton. Hoysa talked about the best ways to start a vegetable garden.
Q: What vegetables grow best in this area?
A: “Tomatoes, beans, lettuce and corn are the easiest. These grow well, are easy to plant and easy to maintain.”
Q: When should you plant?
A: “Potatoes, lettuce, onions and peas may be planted around April 1. For other crops, the beginning of May is best because there is no danger of frost. Lettuce and onions need to be planted early.”
Q: How do you prepare *the soil?
A: “Use a shovel or rototiller to turn the soil over. Don’t plant in wet ground.”
Q: How much sun do most vegetables need?
A: “At least six to eight hours in full sun.”
Q: How should you handle weeds?
A: “I suggest hand-picking weeds. Sprays that can kill weeds may sometimes damage other plants, too. You can use mulch to keep weeds from growing and makes them easier to pull. Straw or leaves can be used as mulch.”
