“Aldrich Field.” Since leaving the coaching ranks. Ms. Spieker has become a career firefighter and is now a lieutenant paramedic for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. In addition, she serves the Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company as Assistant Chief and Treasurer.
Talking with her about the upcoming season, Coach Spieker said, “The track team has three talented, experienced returning lettermen — senior shot and discus man, BJ Christian, junior distance runner, Phillip Thomas, and sophomore sprinter Zach Bridgeman. They will need to provide the leadership to show a very large, young and inexperienced team the ‘ins and outs’ of track competition.
Many young athletes or those new to track will be learning skills and tech-, niques this year that hopefully will allow them to place in the competitive meets. Based on our present experience level, I would anticipate a slow start with much progress as the season goes along. The eighth graders are also practicing with the team and may be allowed to participate in meets.
However, their performance will not count towards team scoring. We hope to get several "cross-over" athletes out periodically to tap some fine young talent that is involved in other sports. The reality of making this happens does get difficult and we ll have to see how it plays out. Overall my goal this year is to help this group of athletes become competitive and give them an opportunity to find that track may offer them a place in sports during their high school years.”
As of this article, there are 48 boys and girls participating in track practices in preparation for the first meets. On Monday, March 26 the team will travel to Luray for a dual-meet at the Bulldogs’ track starting at 4 p.m. More on the track team in next weeks’ paper.
