Cavity-nesting birds are the type of birds that may use a man-made birdhouse, especially if a natural cavity is not nearby. You can put birdhouses up any time of the year. In the spring, birds will use them as nest sites. But in the winter, birds can use them to roost in and to escape bad weather. Try to face the box away from the prevailing winds. Also make sure the house has good ventilation as well as drainage holes.
