Each side of the ballot was supposed to be alphabetized separately; instead voters in Palm Beach County were confronted with a ballot where the candidates were alphabetized all together on both sides of the ballot and they were consequently required to jump back and forth from part A to part B to figure out whom to vote for.
Buchanan was on B and Bush and Gore on A but all the punch out holes were on the A side. Also Florida permitted many minor parties to enter candidates for president that were not on ballots in other states.
Reader Pond is flat wrong that there were never any problems with butterfly ballots in Florida. In fact, recently in a mid-term election, a challenger to senator Connie Mack (R) filed lawsuits in some Florida counties, including Palm Beach County, where he considered the confusing ballot had cost him votes.
