Too much of one form, color or texture is a visual yawn. The eye has nowhere to rest and keeps roving over the view, looking for something different. Adding a sharp contrast draws the eye and lets the mind stop and take in details.
Gardeners using native plants, Burrell warned, need to be watchful of using too much fine texture which can look weedy. Adding a strong plant with big leaves or a larger piece of art will tame the view and add a sense of intentional design. The subtle details will then be more apparent.
