Athletic Director

It’s finally here — Spring Sports and the excitement of outside athletic competition. All four teams — baseball, softball, soccer and track — have traveled somewhere these last 10 days to participate in a pre-season scrimmage.

This week represents the opening season for baseball, softball and girls’ soccer. The most activity seems to be coming from the only sport that doesn’t have a place to compete and that’s the track team.

Track

New Head Coach, only .to the youngsters, Ms. Ann Spieker is back at the request of the Athletic Director. According to Mr. Smythe, “Without a track coach, and that’s where we were several months ago, there would be many kids that would have no opportunity to experience interscholastic athletic competition. When I asked Ann to help us out, I was hoping for some part-time assistance in keeping our track program alive. But in her typical, high-energy and enthusiastic manner, she has stepped up ‘Big Time’ and taken over the whole program. Assisted by newcomer, Mr. Allen Comer, they have energized the track program to a level I don’t think it’s seen since Ann left coaching here back in 1986. I am so proud to have her back on our team. The way she works with these kids, you can only be grateful that we have her with us. She’s a special person.”

Ms. Spieker has a Master’s Degree in PE and Health with special courses taken in Athletic Training. She coached and taught here at RCHS for 16 years. During that time, she started the first girls’ track and field team. That team, along with community supporters, cleared and leveled the ground that today is our current soccer field and 400meter training track.
