The new census numbers reveal that:
• The population of Rappahannock County has grown from 6,622 on April 1, 1990 to 7,664 on July 1, 1999. That represents an increase of 1,042 persons, or 15.7 percent over the decade.
• The largest population group in Rappahannock is made up by our 25to 44-year-olds, who at 2,383 make up 31 percent of the population.
Children four years old and younger total 439, or less than 6 percent, while at the other end of the spectrum, there are 1,054 residents over 65 years of age (13.7 percent).
• Most of the net growth here has been in recent years.
For example, census figures for the period July 1, 1998 to July 1, 1999 show that there were 65 births, 55 deaths, 311 residents gained from “domestic migration (from other places in the U.S.),” and an additional three persons from “international (outside of U.S.) migration.”
This has resulted in a net gain of 335 residents in one year, or almost one-third of the growth in the decade since 1990.
• In comparison with five other neighboring counties, Rappahannock, with 1,042, placed fifth in the number of new residents added since 1990 — behind Page County with 1,475, and ahead of Madison, with 678.
