If you have birdhouses that were up from last year, now is the time to clean them out before they have occupants this year. Clean out any nests or debris. You can disinfect them using one part bleach to 10 parts water. Rinse extremely well and let dry before putting the house back in place.
A fun project to get children interested in birds is by helping them make their own birdhouse. It is easy and the only things needed are a half-gallon milk carton, a stapler, a roll of masking tape, brown shoe polish and a few paper towels.
