The true life story of Helen Keller’s miraculous achievements was well known when I was a school boy. Our parents were her contemporaries and Helen Keller was alive and telling her story in person to audiences of all ages in America and in many countries of the world.
Helen Keller’s inspiring story of overcoming deafness and blindness caused by scarlet fever as a child, so memorably dramatized in the movie and play, “The Miracle Worker”, still inspires millions to overcome physical handicaps.
When the concept of Lionism was just beginning, Helen Keller challenged the small group of Lion Founders to become “Knights of the Blind”. That mission is still alive and well in thousands of Lions Clubs in scores of countries.
Most of you know, especially the parents of our county school students, that the Rappahannock Lions schedule eye and ear examinations for all children from kindergarten through 12 grade each year. Our Lions think it’s the most important service we contribute to the youth and the future of our community.
