As a parent of two students,
and supporter of both athletic and academic extra curricular activities, I would like to thank the efforts of our athletic director, Jon Smythe.
Not only does he care about the sport teams, he has a genuine care for all students. I was astounded when I first heard he was only part time. The job of athletic director is a full time position. I have been involved in several different school systems, and never once did a successful school program not have an athletic whose sole purpose was just that. I hope that our school system and community realizes Mr. Smythe’s worth, and offer this position to him full time if he wants the job.
At the same time, I am very disappointed in our school system and community in their lack of support for two of our athletes at the State Wrestling Championships. Not only was there no monetary funding for their two-day event, but the athletes and the coach had to provide their own transportation.
The cost of a hotel room for the students was only $150 for two days. We talk of Panther Pride and community support, but how much pride is there when a young student realizes that the school does not care enough to help support their success.
Athletics is not more important than academics, but it does play an important role in developing our youth with selfesteem and confidence. When my husband and I found out that there would be no support for the athletes going to the tournament, we told the coach we would fund the hotel room and food for the boys. The
