There will be a volunteer Roadside and Riverside Clean-Up along Route 707 and the Hughes River this Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. This will be followed by a Pot Luck Cookout and Bonfire along the river in Slate Mills. Interested participants may meet at Mountainside Market between 8 and 8:30 a.m. or at the junction of Route 707 and Route 231 by 9 a.m., or meet along the road and river throughout the day. Plans are to pick up trash along the road all the way to the junction of Route 604, where the Hughes and Hazel rivers join, and along Pophams Ford Road. Riverside clean up will depend on the Weather, and will include the stretch of the Hughes along Popham’s Ford Road from the lord. An optional lunch break will take place from noon to 1 p.m. at Debby Settle's house on Popham’s Ford Road, 987-9561. The Pot Luck Cookout and Bonfire will take place along the river on the property of Bob Lasater and Kathryn Sumpter, 547-3717 in Slate Mills off Route 605. The fire will start promptly at 4, and* the sharing of food and fellowship* will last until dusk. Participants should bring food for themselves at lunch and some to share for supper. Layered clothing is recommended. Bags will be provided.
