Assistant Coach of Rappahannock County High School’s Varsity Volleyball team Mike Weir knows his girl’s have a hard act to follow this season after coming in second in the state last winter.
Nonetheless, he feels confident, saying the best way to describe his team is likely with a T-shirt slogan he recently saw: “We are not rebuilding, we are reloading.”
This does not mean that a season as successful as last will come without effort however.
“We lost probably the best player in the state, and she helped us an awful lot," he said. Helping to alleviate this problem, he said, is the fact he is working with an older team, with five seniors out of the team’s nine players.
“We have a lot of experience on the team this year,” said Weir.
This experience is perhaps their greatest asset. “We have high expectations for them. They are a talented bunch of young ladies and with the team’s experience we expect them to win a lot of games,” he said.
Junior Varsity Coach Jackie Settle also has high hopes for her team. “I think we’re going to perform pretty good,” she said.
While Weir and head varsity coach Jared Nieters have an experienced team, Settle’s players are young, many in the eighth grade, she said. This is not stopping her from dreams of victory; instead she is using this to her advantage.
“There were a lot of girls that came out which means we have a nice pool to choose our players from and we’ll have a nice large team.”
