James Madison in a speech to the Virginia Convention (June 16, 1788) said, “I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations."
It was all around us that ideals of liberty and property filled the minds of young Virginians: Washington, Jefferson, Madison. Our highest ideals were born in these very hills and grew out of these very streets into this “remarkable experiment” we call America.
This is no place to let liberty, or individual property rights die.
