Cheerleading coach Bonnie Puilin says her team is a new breed of cheerleaders.
“Cheerleading now in the new millennium is not the same cheerleading that was done back in 1970. It’s a competitive sport. It is much more competitive than what people realize.” she said.
In addition to the traditional sideline team, Rappahannock now fields a competition team as well. This team, Puilin said, traveled to a competition at Kings Dominion last April and has plans to return in October.
Puilin was pleased with the performance of the young women and men on her team. She said that while Rappahannock was the only single A school at the event, facing off against numerous AAA squads, they still managed to finish third.
Puilin said one of the strengths that made this success possible is their ability to perform stunts well. This is in part due to the four male members of her team, which enable them to do more complex stunts. She says however, that their strength alone is not enough to help the team succeed.
