For three years, the judges’ platform at Bill Fletcher’s Thornton Hill Farm near Sperryville was ghostly quiet.
The timber fences were getting overgrown.
Briars poked between the rails, and the faded flags hung limp.
It was as though the once-popular course pined for cheers long gone from the rolling Rappahannock hills.
On Sept. 13, all will be renewed.
For the first time since the Rappahannock Hunt moved its race meet to another county location in 2000, Thornton Hill Farm will host steeplechase racing again.
The newly recognized Thornton Hill Hounds, a so-called “farmer’s pack,” was admitted to the Masters, of Foxhounds Association this spring.
“With that recognition, we decided to have races at Thornton Hill again,” said joint-master Jeff LeHew, who helms the club with father Larry.
The rolling Thornton Hill course, long a fixture with area racing fans for its sweeping views, superb racing action and elevated tailgate parking spaces, was prime for renewal, LeHew said.
