The aim of the CREP program is to provide buffer zones of vegetation along streams and around wetland and ponq^- The vegetation controls soil erosion, reduces and cleanses runoff, adds to groundwater recharge on farms, helps prevent flooding downstream and protect wildlife habitats.
Since all water flowing through Rappahannock County ends up in the Chesapeake Bay, enrollment in the voluntary program is easy. The Chesapeake Bay watershed is a Conservation Priority Area, thus there is no competition and no sign-up dates. CREP is available all year around.
