“When Amy Silver and I got together we created this energy that put plans into motion,” said Davis. She went on to say that Principal Roger Mello was very supportive of the program and the fact that his parents have an organic farm in Culpeper has fostered a strong connection to agriculture in him.
Monies were needed to put the project in motion and The Cole Family Foundation seeded the initial funds to get the program ur and running. "Farm to Table has grown and is now supported bv the community at large, “ said Davis.
The current Farm to Table program coordinator Trista Scheuerlein is excited with how much the program has developed.
"The landscape of Rappahannock is so unique and we need to encourage the kids to stay here,” she said. A whole curriculum
approach
Beginning with the horticulture class at the high school the program has since grown to encompass multi-disciplinary subjects.
“It is a synergy that is happening to integrate different classrooms,” said Scheuerlein. The building trades class has constructed sheds and outdoor seating for the gardens, the culinary class utilizes the produce in their cooking for Meals on Wheels and other projects, and the environmental science class has developed a composting program and helped clean up the beds for the winter.
