After almost 10 years in Spenyville, the Mountainside Market will be closing its doors this week.
The market, which opened in June, 1995, has been a resource for organic foods and alternative health care products, as well as a popular gathering place for locals.
However, with lower traffic counts at nearby Luray Caverns and the Shenandoah National Park and growing market competition in Rappahannock County, owner Brian Ross has found it necessary to close his business.
“I just can’t compete with the obstacles any longer,” he said recently.
While Ross planned for the business to simply be an organic food market in the beginning, the business concept grew with requests of customers over the years.
“Mountainside Market became more than I ever envisioned,” said Ross. “The community made the store what they wanted it to be.”
The additions included a laundromat and a pub, which were added five years ago.
The pub concept came as a result of “Thirsty Thursday” at the market.
When Mountainside Market was being constructed, Ross would check in on progress, offering the workers a beer during the afternoon.
Thus began a tradition for locals, dropping by for “Thirsty Thursday.”
