By Jeanne Spath Rappahannock News Staff Writer In 1986, A1 and Cheryl Kellert drove into Rappahannock County via Rt. 211, through Amissville, in search of land where they could see a dream become reality. The drive took them through “the gates of heaven,” a view neither will soon forget, and history for the Kellert family was made. The Kellerts opened the doors of Gray Ghost Vineyard in 1994, and have continued the family operation with their son A1 on board as assistant manager of production and daughter, Amy Payette as the director of marketing. Not only are visitors to the vineyard greeted with a spectacular view of immaculately groomed grape vines, but also the charming southern hospitality of the owners. Before Gray Ghost When A1 was studying chemistry in college at the age of 19, he spent the summer doing research with his department head. This research evolved into winemaking, a family business the department head grew up with in Germany. Once A1 and Cheryl were married, the couple traveled to California on a business trip in 1981. The four months there took them into Napa Valley, where they were privileged to spend countless hours with some of the world’s top winemakers. “Since we were from Virginia and Virginia was not a.threat in the winemaking industry, they shared their secrets openly,” said Kellert. Now the Kellert’s Virginia wines are competing with California wines, and bringing home countless awards. Bidding Adieu Perhaps the award the Kellerts are most pleased with is for their 2003 Adieu which took Best in Show for the 2004 Wines of the South Competition. Their only regret is that there is no more Adieu available for the public. However, one last bottle has a treasured place in the Gray
