The tranquil beauty of Rappahannock winters cannot completely dispel the mental images we nave of icy roads and power outages. Even the brief spells of mild weather we’ve had this winter aren’t very convincing. We know how brutally cold and icy it can be in late February.

And we’d be less than truthful not to admit to a persistent longing for the first true signs of spring.

They say the best remedy for cabin fever is to do something outside. Maybe ski, hike, take down the Christmas lights, etc. But the weather doesn’t always permit outside activities, so when we can’t get outside we spend hours idly flipping through seed catalogs and wondering, where is spring at this very moment?

Think about it. Where are the spring beauties, bloodroots, crocuses, and daffodils now? How about the leaves and flowers of maples, spicebushes and redbuds? Where are the mushrooms? Where are the bees, butterflies, cicadas, millipedes, spiders? We know where most of the paper wasps, houseflies and ladybugs are. They’re overwintering in our house!
