However, the desire to return to his home never left him, and he recently returned to open a restaurant of his own.
Coming home led to a visit at the Bleu Rock Inn, just to see how things were going and ended up in a dream come true.
“I just stopped by for a moment and found out they were looking for a change in management and a new chef. Now, I want to reinvest in Bleu Rock, rebuilding a reputation for fine cuisine,” he said.
Although McCullough has traveled all over the world, he said that Rappahannock County is one of the most beautiful places he has ever seen.
“The story I have told in Alaska, Mexico, Australia, the Bahamas—everywhere I go is about the year we had a terrible ice storm in Rappahannock County,” he began, “no one else could get into the Bleu Rock except me and one other cook.”
“I built a fire in the fireplace and then looked out the window, seeing the most incredible sunset over the vineyards, the ice glistening pinks and oranges. I just sat there, watching the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. And now, I get to come back. What more could you ask for, my dream job only five miles from home in the town where I grew up,” McCullough beamed.
