On February 2, Virginia
Secretary of Natural Resources W. Tayloe Murphy, Jr. released an action plan to reduce nutrients and sediments in Virginia rivers feeding the Chesapeake Bay. The strategy outlines practices needed to remove the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries from the federal list of impaired waters by 2010. Local conservation efforts that focus on protecting and restoring local waterways are part of this larger effort since the streams are all part of the vast network of surface waters that drain to the Bay.
Many of these smaller tributaries in our region are also identified as impaired waterways and will have restoration efforts targeted to them.
In order to help achieve these goals cost-share funds have been released to the Culpeper Soil & Water Conservation District for the Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practices CostShare Program. This program is designed to address agricultural sources of nutri
