We knew that spring peepers are here all year. But we must admit we thought they avoided freezing by burying themselves the way various insects, fish and amphibians do (and even some reptiles such as turtles). Deep in the soil or mud at pond bottoms, these animals can remain dormant without freezing. This is important because if an organism is exposed to freezing conditions, ice crystals form in its i cells and it dies. That is, v unless it can produce some sort of cellular antifreeze.

Apparently frogs that freeze in winter can convert stored food into a variety of proteins and sugars that significantly reduce the freezing point of cellular water. When temperatures rise, this process is reversed.

Much of the research on this has been reported by Kenneth B. Storey, a Canadian cryobiologist from the Institute of Biochemistry at Carleton University in Ottawa.
