Luke Demaitre was bom near Bruges, Belgium. He graduated from the University of Louvain, Belgium and received a Ph.D. in history from the City University of New York. Demaitre has lectured in eight countries, published several books and dozens of articles on various aspects of the history of medicine.
In 1995, after teaching in New York for almost 30 years, Demaitre and his wife Dominique moved to Rappahannock County, where they are spending the happiest years of their lives. Demaitre currently teaches a course in the history of medicine for fourthyear medical students, as a visiting professor at the University of Virginia. He also consults at the National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health.
