“People were in a kind of daze. Everyone seemed to be in a state of denial,” recalled Montse Vittitow, Justin’s mother.
Before Katrina
Justin Vittitow moved to New Orleans in January to study jazz drumming in a city renowned for its music. Justin is a jazz drummer, and he and his friends moved to New Orleans to learn rather than party. “We went there to study music. I wanted to absorb music,” explained Justin. The students lived in a basement apartment in New Orleans and kept a music studio on the eighth floor of a nearby building. Justin worked as a cook at a Reginelli’s Pizza to support his music habit while studying with famed jazz drummer Jim Varekovich. It was the Saturday before Katrina when Justin first became aware that a very serious storm was coming his way. “Saturday morning we woke up, and first started hearing on the news and from [his parents] that it was going to be bad.”
