Replacement of the Tapps Ford bridge on Route 645 at the Rappahannock-Fauquier line will begin within the next four to six weeks under a contract with Moore Brothers Company, Inc.
The contract calls for the new bridge to be completed by May 19, 2006, at a cost of $775,426. The contract also includes an incentive for early completion. The new bridge replaces a metal truss bridge originally built in 1882 and moved to its present location at Tapps Ford from the Madison Mills area of Madison County.
The bridge was closed in May 2004 after an inspection by VDOT engineers discovered severe corrosion and metal fatigue. The bridge inspectors also found damage from overweight trucks. v Prior to its closure the allowable weight had been reduced from a seven-ton limit to a three-ton limit, but the damage discovered during the inspection was judged to be so severe that the bridge was ordered closed.
The new bridge will be built of pre-stressed concrete slab approach spans with a 100-foot metal truss span. The existing substructure will be rehabilitated to support the new bridge structure.
