Despite the information coming from the national media and his family , Justin and his roommates considered staying in New Orleans, especially given the attitude of the locals they knew.
“None of the natives felt it was too urgent,” recalled Justin. “They’ve been through hurricanes .There was no sense of urgency.” The local sense of security initially convinced Justin and his roommates to plan on staying through the storm in their eighth floor music studio, where they imagined they would be reasonably safe. However, on Sunday the Katrina warnings from government officials became more strident, and so did the reports from national news media. This got Justin’s parents moving.

“On Sunday morning I got on the phone to Justin and said basically ‘Get out of dodge,” remembered Jim Vittitow.
