Jail solutions studied
The board voted to authorize spending $10,300.00 to study the potential for a regional jail. Page, Warren, Rappahannock and Shenandoah Counties are paying a total of $34,330.00 for the study. If a jail is built, it will serve these four counties.
As one of the smallest in the state, Rappahannock’s jail is periodically “in the gunsights for closure” according to McCarthy. Also, a regional jail would receive some state funding, while in the future, local jails will get none. Saying “we need to be pushing this snowball rather than in front of it” McCarthy opined one way or another the Rappahannock jail “will be closed in my lifetime”.
Sheriff Larry Sherertz concurred, arguing,”it’s better to get in the wagon now rather than waiting and having the terms dictated to us.”
If a regional jail is built, the local jail may still see some use for work release, and overnight lockup.
Police motorcycle escorts
Sheriff Larry Sherertz brought up what he termed the “perennial plague of motorcycles” referring to the many accidents that occur every year.
He proposed high intensity patrols in conjunction with the Virginia State Police, and suggested having a pilot car to escort groups of motorcyclists through the county, to discourage speeding and recklessness.
While there was broad agreement that motorcycle wrecks and recklessness are problems, the utility of this particular idea was debated, and no action taken.
Supervisors oppose
FSA closing
Responding to state Farm Services Agency plans to close down their office in Culpeper and relocate in Fauquier County, the board discussed the county’s options.
During public comment, county resident and farmer Monira Rifaat urged the board to oppose the closing, because it will force local farmers to do much more driving when they need to attend to matters with FSA and with the Soil Conservation District.
Rifaat asked the board “to support continued inquiry into alternatives to closing” the Culpeper office.
The board voted to draft a letter asking the state FSA to keep the Culpeper office open.

share of school
The board gave final approved for the sale of Rappahannock’s 25 percent stake in the George Washington Carver Piedmont Regional Education Center, located in Culpeper. Rappahannock’s stake will be sold to Culpeper.
Hurricane
Katrina Relief
McCarthy proposed a donation to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief. The board approved a donation of $5,000. They also approved spending up to $2500 to match dollar for dollar contributions made by county employees to the American Red Cross by October 31st.
