HIGHLY SYMBOLIC The symbolism surrounding death is reflective of the attitude of the times. For instance, the Puritans believed that “those who you love, you chasten.” Regularly struck by death, they had good reason to believe that life was difficult, and their gravestones reflected this grim attitude. The Puritans’ “angels" often included skulls or were winged grim reapers. As life became easier, individuals created their own interpretations, and more pleasant images were seen on gravestones. One image that has remained constant is the figure of a tiny lamb, which often marks the graves of young children. In Christianity, the child's soul is perceived as devoid of sin and, thus, a “lamb of God."
