One of just a few courses in the nation built solely for the purpose of steeplechase racing, Great Meadow was a lovely debutante just in time for the 1984 inaugural meet. When the previous home to the prestigious and handsome International Gold Cup and its thusly named race became homeless after the Ligonier, Pa., course closed due to development, Great Meadow was ready to ride to the rescue.
Great Meadow was created out of a former crayfish swamp as new host to the Virginia Gold Cup when that in-town Warrenton course was also lost to developers. With the new track already in the planning stages, officials were more than happy to grab the International cup by the handle and invite it south.
Because the Virginia cup is run over timber, organizers swapped the International race from hurdles to timber, too,
