Carter would come out to Rappahannock to hunt, and get away to the countryside. For that, and because several old friends gravitated out here from the city, he was drawn to make the move out here permanent. Of course, now that he’s out here full time, it’s a different story. The fall hunting season is the big busy season at the store too. “I used to hunt,” he said, “but now I work too much during the busy season to get out there very often.”

Like Carter himself used to do, a good many people come out of the city to hunt and see the countryside. While he has local clients, a big chunk of the store’s business comes from tourists and day trippers. Carter said “about 65 percent of our business comes out of the city. Or it did. Now it’s being shut down by the gas prices.”
