Montpelier changed hands in 1901 when William duPont bought the historic home and grounds. Daughter Marion duPont delighted in the equestrian playground that became her lifelong home at the age of 8. She was constantly pushing at the constraints on women — she delighted in breaking a social taboo by riding astride, like a man, at Madison Square Garden in 1915.
