According to the Virginia State Police Department of Criminal Justice Information Services: • You must be 21 years of age to purchase a handgun, and 18 years of age to purchase a rifle or shotgun. • Unless you are licensed, you may not purchase more than one handgun a month. An 'nr'tant background check must be performed at the time of purchase. Several categories of people, such as those-convicted of violent crimes, those convicted of any felony, those who have been institutionalized for a mental illness, and thpse convicted of violating various drug laws, both misdemeanor and felony, may not purchase or possess a firearm. • You may not carry a concealed, loaded handgun without getting a license. To get a license, you must demonstrate that you have taken some form of gun safety class. Most of these restrictions do not apply to antique and modem black powder weapons.
