The program, all hurdles and flat, is capped by the $30,000,2 1/2-mile Noel Laing Stakes over brush, named in memory of Scott’s talented Virginiabred jockey.
Laing steered Scott’s Trouble Maker to victory in the 1934 Maryland Hunt Cup. But, defending his title in the 1935 race, Trouble Maker had a fatal fall at the 17th fence. Laing was heartbroken and stayed at the fence until his mount was buried.
