fusing case for herself this summer at Saratoga. First, she had the biggest win of her career, winning the Go for Wand by an incredible nine and a half lengths. But later in the month she almost literally stopped in the Personal Ensign and finished 14 lengths back, confusing trainer Ibdd Pletcher and regular rider John Velasquez.

Not to be forgotten in all the Breeders’ Cup hype is the BC steeplechase, run Oct. 22, as usual a week before the rest of the Breeders’ Cup races. Defending Eclipse award-winner and strong local connection Hirapour will probably prep on the flat at one of the fall meets here in Virginia.
Also Virginia-owned and - trained, Sur La Tete had a strong spring season and could be back for another try in the 2 5/8ths-mile championship (he was third last year).
Steeplechasing has been catching some flak recently from several writers at the Daily Racing Form. The sport has been criticized, unfairly in my opinion, by Mike Watchmaker, that because it is often run as the first race on the card at Saratoga it keeps him and others from playing the early Pick 4.
