Suspected murderer and fugitive Ira Wayne Cloniger was apprehended late the night of Sunday July 9 in a field near Massie’s Comer in Rappahannock County, ending a week long manhunt for the dangerous felon.
Cloniger surrendered to Deputy Gary Jenkins of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office at around 11 p.m., after being surrounded by several officers and a Culpeper County K9 unit.
The RCSO has been searching for Cloniger since the early morning of July 2, when he is believed to have murdered Edward Fletcher Jr., 29, of Stephen City. Cloniger was staying in Rappahannock County after being released on a $10,000 secured bond from Culpeper County custody, where he has been charged with malicious wounding for stabbing a 60-year-old man in April.
According to sources in the RCSO, Fletcher died after a receiving a knife wound to the neck during an argument with Cloniger. The incident occurred at the home of Cloniger’s brother near Washington,Va, where all three men were staying. According to the RCSO, the weapon used was probably a common folding knife.
