During this hot time of year, it is important to keep trees and shrubs well irrigated. But what does well irrigated mean? Should you turn on your sprinkler system daily like you would with turf? Probably not.
Trees and shrubs require deeper, more infrequent irrigation than do turf and annual or perennial flowers. Therefore, even though automated sprinkler systems may be keeping the flowers and turf green, they probably aren’t supplying sufficient amounts of water to the roots systems of woody plants because of the frequent, short schedule.
We recommend landscape plants receive one inch of water per week to their root systems during the growing season, preferably in one or two applications. There are other methods that can be used in conjunction with irrigation to make more efficient use of water and benefit plant health.
